Is Anxiety Normal?

It can cause feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and lack of energy, making it difficult to enjoy life. But you don’t have to face this alone.

As a specialist in women’s mental health, Pynk Health understands the unique challenges that women face when it comes to depression. With a compassionate and empathetic approach, she will work with you to develop a customised treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and concerns. Anxiety is not always related to an underlying condition or cause. Instead, stress, relationships, work, financial and emotional concerns can all contribute to it. In Australia, 1 in 3 women will experience this type of anxiety in their lifetime.

Most Common Types of Anxiety Disorders

There are several different types of anxiety disorders, but the following are a few of the most common anxiety disorders.

Generalised Anxiety Disorder

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterised by excessive, uncontrollable worry and anxiety about everyday events or activities. Common symptoms include increased heart rate, sweating, dry mouth, and sleep disturbances. The DSM-5 lists criteria for diagnosis, including excessive worry for at least 6 months and 3 or more symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, causing significant distress and impairment in daily life.

Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder is diagnosed when an individual experiences recurring, unexpected panic attacks with four or more symptoms, such as heart palpitations, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, and fear of losing control. The fear of having continued panic attacks can cause behaviour changes, such as avoiding triggering situations. The panic attacks must not be due to substances or medical conditions, and not better explained by another mental disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social Anxiety Disorder is characterized by a marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others. This fear is usually excessive and out of proportion to the actual threat, causing the person to avoid or endure social interactions with intense fear or anxiety. This can result in significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other areas of life.

How is Anxiety Treated?

There are many things a person can do to try to deal with their anxiety. Seeing a clinician can be really beneficial. It can be helpful to speak with an experienced medical professional who can help you cope with your anxiety and find healthy, productive ways of dealing with it. When you see a therapist, they can help you develop a plan to deal with your worries appropriately.
